Wood siding comes in many different profiles and can last a lifetime if maintained properly.

Composite siding is less expensive, but once the interior materials get wet, watch out! It will rot out like wet cardboard.

Hardie Siding is a concrete fiber board siding that does not rot. This is a great product to install, especially if you have a squirrel problem.

Vinyl siding is a very attractive and low-maintenance product. It is installed directly over the existing siding system and is pre-colored so you never have to paint again.

One thing to keep in mind about siding is that removing siding can be like opening a can of worms.

It can expose framing damage, insulation damage, termites, and other problems. If framing repairs are needed, this may also necessitate sheetrock or other interior repairs. Prices can easily increase if the “hidden problems” are discovered. However, by maintaining your home (i.e. caulking trim and siding, painting, keeping vegetation from growing on the house, etc) you can avoid many of these problems.
