Energy Saving tips to save money on energy costs any time of the year: 

  • Install on demand water heater or set temp to 120 degrees or less
  • Insulate water heater with insulation wrap.
  • Turn off or program Vampire Electric devices
      1. Set PC to energy saving mode
      2. Turn off pc when not in use
      3. Turn off printers, laser printers are energy hogs.
      4. Turn off monitor and speakers
      5. Switch from CRT to LCD monitor
      6. Unplug chargers that are not charging anything. (ie Cell phone, Ipod, Power tools etc)
  • Use Motion sensors on exterior lights to save electricity at night.
  • Use solar pathway lights to light paths at night.
  • Use LED Christmas lights or low voltage bulbs for holidays.
  • Install electronic thermostat to raise/lower temp when not home and to raise/lower when you arrive home.

  • Change HVAC filters regularly
  • Seal HVAC duct work.
  • Leave blinds and drapes closed during the day reduces heat transfer through windows.
  • Replace old windows with double paned glass or replace fogged glass, caulk/seal windows.
  • Install solar screens or 3M film
  • Replace old doors with insulated ones or replace worn weather stripping and door sweeps.
  • Add or replace insulation in attic and walls.
  • Make sure attic has adequate ventilation.
  • Install radiant barrier in attic.
  • Insulate attic stair access and stop air flow around attic stair access.
  • Install low flow shower heads, aerators, toilets and fix leaky faucets.
  • Plant trees for shade.
  • Install ceiling fans (turn off when no one is in the room)
  • Upgrade to energy star rated appliances
  • Do full loads of laundry not partial loads.
  • Clean dryer lint screen after each use and keep the dryer dent pipe clean.
  • Create plant shade over/near A/C compressor unit.
  • Use light colored roof shingles
  • Insulate the garage door.
  • Close the damper on the chimney if not is use.
  • Clean the coils on your refrigerator and freezer.
  • If possible keep the second frig or freezer in the house not in the garage.
  • Turn off exhaust fans in baths/laundry rooms when not needed, not only do they remove heat and moisture but they suck hot/cold air outside. You can use a timer switch.
  • Switch to fluorescent bulbs instead of incandescent where possible.
