A little about Dallas Roof installation…
If you’ve ever flown over DFW airport and looked down you’ll notice two things. Lots of swimming pools and lots of gray roofs. Most of those roofs are made of Composition Shingles (Asphalt Shingles). In fact, at least 80% of all homes in the United States have composition shingle roofs.
There are two styles of composition shingles: “3 Tab” and “Architectural” for roof installation and roof replacement
|
|
Sometimes they are referred to as “three-tab” because they come in a strip with notches that create what appears to be three separate shingles. This style of shingle comes with 20 year and 25 year warranties. They also carry a 60 mph wind resistance rating.
Premium Composition/Asphalt Shingle products are called “architectural”, “dimensional”, or “laminate” shingles”. These thicker shingles cast shadow lines like a thick wood shake. The result is a textured, rich appearance instead of the traditional flat surface of standard three-tab shingles. Architectural shingles come with 30 year, 40 year, 50 year, and even Lifetime warranties. They also carry 70 mph – 130 mph wind resistance ratings.
All asphalt shingles are coated with a layer of mineral granules that protect the shingle from sunlight, add color and, in some cases, help resist algae and fungus growth. Manufacturers can also prevent unwanted plant life by adding copper or zinc to the granule mix.

Roof Installation with Impact Resistant Roofing Shingles are a fairly new option…
Rainy Day Roofing believes Impact Resistant roofing shingles can be a great roof installation choice for many homeowners. The Dallas Texas area receives more than its fair share of damaging hail so this option is one worth consideration.
Between 1991 and 1995, wind and hail caused an average of $8 billion in insurance payouts each year. Wind and hail damage to roofs comprises a significant portion of this cost. Hail damage to asphalt shingles may include severe granule loss, material loss at shingle edges, and penetration.
New Impact Resistant shingle products are designed to resist damage from impact and high winds. They meet the most stringent standards for impact resistance (Class 4) set by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), and wind resistance set by UL and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM International).
Several manufacturers offer asphalt shingles designed to resist the effects of severe weather such as wind and impact from flying debris or hail. Different proprietary methods are used to keep granules attached to the shingle, to prevent shingle breaking during impact, and to keep shingles attached to the sheathing during high winds.
Special Note: UL 2218 classifies the resistance of roofing products to impact damage. In the test, steel balls are directed at roof samples, and damage is observed. Products that receive a Class 4 rating from UL 2218 are the most resistive to hail damage. Some major insurance companies are offering homeowner premium discounts for the use of roofing products that receive a Class 4 rating. Consult with your Rainy Day Roofing expert for details on these discounts.
Standard Roof Installation Process
Step 1 – Material Delivery

Step 2 – Cover pools, A/C units, etc

Step 3 – Removal of existing roof (we only tear off one section at a time and your roof will never be completely exposed in case inclement weather rolls in)

Step 4 – Installation of valley flashing (also called 90# roll roofing) – Our valley flashing seals itself around the nails so there are no leaks

We lap the valley flashing over the top of the ridge to prevent leaks caused by ice damming

Step 5 – Installation of underlayment (also called felt paper or tar paper) – we always start from the bottom and work our way up – notice how the underlayment overlaps the valley flashing

Step 6 – Measuring for proper shingle spacing

Step 7 – Installation of drip flashing (also called drip edge) – the first picture shows what the old drip flashing looked like

Step 8 – Installation of starter shingles (this keeps the edge of the roof from leaking)

Step 9 – Installation of composition shingles

Step 10 – Installation of plumbing vents (rubber or lead flashings that fit over the PVC pipes or Cast Iron pipes sticking up out of the roof)

Step 11 – Repair or replacement of step flashing (90 degree metal flashing that is installed behind siding or along brick walls)

Step 12 – Installation of ventilation
Turbine Vent (active vent)

Dome Vent (passive vent)

Low-profile Vent (passive vent)

Ridge Vent (passive)

Power Vent (active)

Step 13 – Installation of ridge shingles (also called ridge caps)
Standard Ridge

High Definition Ridge

ACCESSORIES -
Ice and Water Shield – this is installed in the valleys, around chimneys and vents, along the eaves – it is a self adhesive material that prevents leaks from wind-driven rain or ice damming
